He began his career in 1971 as a design engineer, later joining the Hungarian Ministry of Transport with a focus on the development and financing of transport systems. From 1979 to 1989, he worked in government oversight, overseeing the financial control of transport, telecommunications, and construction sectors. In 1989, he completed a professional program at the U.S. GAO.
He held senior positions at the State Audit Office of Hungary (SAO) from 1990, serving as its President between 1997 and 2009. From 2004 to 2007, he was also President of INTOSAI, the global organization of national audit institutions. Later, he held key roles in public asset management, including board membership at the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. and chairmanship of several major supervisory boards.
He served as President of the Fiscal Council of Hungary from 2012 to 2024 and is currently Chief Advisor to the President of the SAO and a member of the Prime Minister’s Strategic Advisory Board.
He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Szeged, has published around 300 professional articles, and is author or editor of numerous books. He has also led major professional associations, including the Hungarian Economic Association and the Association of Hungarian Financial and Economic Auditors.
